The Missing Keystone in the National Park

For 70 years, there were no wolves in Yellowstone National Park. Without predators to keep them on the move, deer and elk herds grazed the riverbanks down to bare mud. Young willow trees and aspens had no chance to grow.

In 1995, scientists reintroduced gray wolves to the park. What happened next surprised almost everyone: the wolves did not just reduce deer numbers; they changed where deer dared to hang out.

The Domino Effect That Changed the Riverbanks

Because deer avoided open valleys near water, willow trees grew five times taller in just six years. Birds returned to the branches. Beavers arrived to eat the trees and built dams, creating ponds that sheltered fish, frogs, and otters.

Most amazing of all: the plant roots held the soil tight, reducing erosion so that the winding rivers stabilized and formed clean, deep pools.
